Sodium borohydride is an inorganic compound in the form of a white to off-white fine crystalline powder or lump. Rapid reaction with methanol at room temperature will produce hydrogen gas. It is hygroscopic and readily deliquescent when water is absorbed. Sodium borohydride is commonly used as a reducing agent in inorganic and organic synthesis. Sodium borohydride has a strong selective reducing effect, capable of selectively reducing carbonyl groups to hydroxyl groups without reacting with carbon-carbon double and triple bonds. Small amounts of sodium borohydride can reduce nitrile to aldehyde, and in excess to amine.
